I love to bake cookies with my son. He's more into the process of cookie baking, rather than the finished product, of course. It's something that has a lot to do with turning the mixer on and off, mixing the ingredients in the big bowl and adding them to the wet mixture as it does its thing.

One of the more satisfying memories I have from my own childhood is eating the cookie dough raw. That's some good shit right there, and even now at the age of forty, it's still one of the best perks to the whole baking thing. Teresa loves it when I bake banana bread and I will be doing that this weekend...

But here's the thing. There are some superstitions in the Chinese culture that persist to this day and one of them has a lot to do with eating raw things. Even if it's just cookie dough. So I'll give Caden a spoon to lick and he'll wander into the office and Teresa will freak out just a little.

We've never gotten sick after eating the stuff, and it tastes so good... MmmmmMMmm

This is a neat little film out of Iowa- two guys on either side of the religious coin having a discussion that brings up a lot of the common arguments apologists use to try and convince atheists they're wrong. I like the antagonist quite a bit... He reminds me a little of one of my favorite atheists Matt Dillahunty of the Atheist Community of Austin. My only quibble is how readily the religious guy feeds the atheist his arguments. Some of them seemed a little out of context given how the whole thing starts out.

Heading out to Ouray Day 4

Ahhhh. What a difference a good night sleep makes.

We got up and were out the door by 9:30.

Today was going to be one of those all day drives. Our plan was to see Telluride, ride up to the village on the free gondola and then skedaddle down to the El Morro National Monument.

But, we spent too much time in Telluride, and to be honest, I wish we'd just skipped it.

I've skied all over the world. Colorado is not high on my list of most awesome places to ski, and I prefer Mammoth to pretty much anywhere else. Telluride looks like all the worst parts of any ski resort I've been to, where the architecture of all the buildings both in the town and on the hill itself scream "look at how much money we've spent here!"

It's like the penis hat for ski resorts.

Most of the people who go there are millionaires, and every effort is spent to show that off.

Personally, I hate shit like that.

It's one thing to make a hill look nice. It's quite another to make it so that normal people can't even afford to stay there at four hundred dollars average a night.

Sheesh. Six bucks for coffee.

Another sign of the upper crust are well manicured older women with lots of plastic surgery jogging about in calf length, clingy sweatpants and name brand shirts and well coiffed older men trying to look younger by dressing in jeans, polo shirts and mountain windbreakers while wearing expensive hiking shoes. But they also have baseball caps on.

Sorry guys. Desperation never looks fashionable.

By the time we came back to our car, we sort of realized we'd overstayed and even driving significantly faster than the posted limits, we'd never make it to El Morro in time.

We headed back to Albuquerque. And I pleasantly drifted between sleep and wakefulness, enjoying dreams of Red Dead Redemption and the real life geography the game was based on. We passed by some amazing vistas and the sunset was spectacular.

Before going back to the house we stopped off and had some Vietnamese food for dinner. Pho. Yummy.

The kids had all napped in the car as well (it was, after all, an eight hour drive, and "99 bottles of beer on the wall" is only entertaining for about half that) so none of us went to sleep early. But tomorrow was going to be a day of west and wewaxation for sure. We had nothing planned.

Heading out to Ouray day 3

Oooh. The night was long and bad. I must've eaten something that didn't agree with me and I got sick. That coupled with a bit of anxiety about my job (specifically not being there)

Ah, lah.

Teresa got me up through Caden, and "Daaaaadeeeeeee waaaaaake UP!" was the first thing I remember hearing.

I so did not want to wake up.

Caden so did want me to get up.

So did Teresa.

I guess I really did. Cause I was in the shower and dressed by 9:15 and we were out the door and heading to our first hike of the day. It was the Box Canyon Falls, just a short hike up the hill from our hotel. But of course, we drove. You know, to save our energy.

We paid the entrance fee and headed up the hill. When we got to the fork we decided to go up first. There's this bridge across the box canyon five hundred feet above the water. The walk up was pretty easy, and Caden did an amazing job keeping up; he was jumping up on the rocks, climbing the shale, he didn't even need a poe, which is Cantonese for "pick me up."

Once we got up there, though... Wow. The view was stunning, and you could hear the falls crashing against the limestone below. There was also a low tunnel carved into the rock that was part of the Ouray Perimeter Hike, a trail that circles the entire town.

From there, we could see Cascade Falls, and Anh decided that we should go there next.

Then we headed back down the first trail and took the second one, that takes you right up to the base of the falls on a series of steel suspension bridges that hug the right side of the canyon wall. All the way at the end is an amazing stairway that goes right to the water. It was misty and amazing and beautiful. There was even some old mining equipment that had been there since the fifties.

Awesome.

Then we headed over to Cascade Falls, which wasn't nearly as cool as the Box Canyon Falls, but it was still pretty neat. We climbed up a lot of loose rock and Caden finally got all tuckered out. I carried him back to the car after we took the requisite pictures.

We ate at the Ouray Brewery for lunch, and my salad was pretty delish.

At that point, Teresa and I took Caden up to the Bachelor-Syracuse Mine Tour. Anh and Tyrone had been there a few years before and they weren't really interested in a return trip so while they walked up and down the eight blocks of Main Street looking for things they really need, we took a "trammer" fifteen hundred feet into a drift that took nine years to dig.

Caden loves trains, and the trammer is essentially an electric engine with a car in front and behind. There were just the three of us on the 3:00 tour, and our guide was a friendly guy who was really well informed. Once we got inside, he gave us a brief history of the mine, and I had plenty of questions.

Truthfully, I don't care if it's a mine or a natural cave, there's something incredibly... weird, I guess, about being inside a mountain. And so at any opportunity, I jump at the chance.

It was a fun tour, and we got some great pictures.

We met up with the gang at the hotel, I took a nap while Teresa and Caden went out to the pool to float around and finally, we ended up at O'Brien's Pub for dinner.

I had a pulled pork sandwich with slaw. Teresa ate most of her Chicken Pot Pie and Caden ate all of his spaghetti and meat-a balls.

We called it a night. Tomorrow it's Telluride, El Morro and back to Albuquerque.

Heading out to Ouray day 2

Wow, morning came fast.

Teresa, as usual, seemed to wake at the crack of dawn, and so around 7:45 my favorite alarm clock, Caden, came in yelling, "wake up, daddy!"

Awesome.

It took me a while after that to actually get out of bed and get showered, but finally, I was up, we were off, and a beautiful six hour drive awaited.

I slept most of the early morning, even after a stop at McDonalds to get some coffee and a couple of Egg McMuffins to share around the van. In fact, it wasn't until Caden got a little carsick around noon that I really woke up. By that time, we were mostly to the Colorado border and the landscape was changing from desert-y scrub with the occasional pine tree to mostly pine trees with sheer rock faces and unbelievable vistas.

Ironically, I was making comparisons to my current favorite video game, Red Dead Redemption and how they dealt with transitions from one style of landscape to another, seamlesly. The trick is, that the game does in forty minutes what the real world takes hours to accomplish. It's pretty remarkable.

We passed through Durango, which brought back some pretty cool memories from a few years back (especially the steam engine that travels between Durango and Silverton. That was a lot of fun...). I had forgotten what a small town it was, though. Forty five minutes later, we passed Silverton and took the 550 spur loop on out to Ouray, fifty miles away. This began what's called the million dollar highway and a very perilous drive.

We did have to wait for a bit two miles out of Ouray as a construction crew were helping nature along by tearing down some of the rock on the inside lane. They had the lane closed, and traffic both directions were stopped for about half an hour until the let the cars heading downhill go first. On the other side, we passed a long, long line of cars waiting their turn.

I didn't know this, but Ouray calls itself the Switzerland of America.

I am still not sure why. It doesn't really look like any town I've been through in that neutral country. Oh sure, back in the fifties and sixties they tried to make some of the buildings look Swiss by using stylized verandas and alpine architecture, but like the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland, which is sort of how Americans imagined Hawaii was like after World War 2, Ouray's attempt to recreate a smaller version of Zermatt seem largely based on a romantic notion of what it looks like, rather than what it really looks like.

It's still pretty awesome.

We went swimming in our hotel's pool first thing, and I was amazed at how much progress Caden has made. He can swim! He jumps in the water and can make his way to the side pretty quickly, and his fearlessness might cause him some problems.

We were not paying attention when he decided to show us how he could swim across the shallow end, and fortunately, Teresa saw him when he failed to make it. But, it scared the bejeezus out of him, and ended the afternoons swimming. It scared his mother and me too.

It happened so fast.

Later, after rinsing all the chlorine off and taking a small breather, we made plans for the Outlaw at 6:30.

It was within walking distance, and it was really good. Although afterwards I was pretty sleepy. We shared sauteed mushrooms and fried calamari, Teresa had the Telapia special and I had the T-Bone in a brown Cognac sauce. Yummy. Caden slept through most of the meal, and only woke up to eat some rice and have a couple of spoonfuls of soup.

We were all tuckered out and came back to the hotel early.

And slept.

That's messed up!

This was a listener response to a Christian caller on one of my favorite podcasts, The Atheist Experience, a call in show out of Austin, Texas. Denise called up, slightly drunk, and told the hosts God didn't send you to hell, you sent yourself to hell. When Matt pulled the above logical argument out and threw down, the caller replied; "That's messed up!"

And then continued on as if nothing had changed.

Finally, at the end of his rope, Matt exploded an F-bomb and Denise used that as an excuse to exit the conversation, stage left.

It was very entertaining.

Heading out to Ouray day 1

Today was a long one. I had spoken with my supervisor at work about taking the next two days off and he was totally down with it, but even now I was still nervy- like I was doing something wrong. My supervisor assured me that everything was fine- my shots were happening fast, I was ahead of schedule on most everything and a couple of days wasn't gonna matter.

Still. I was feeling really awkward about it. This was one of those vacations that I didn't need to go on, and I even mentioned that to my supe and he was still telling me it was fine.

That's how I'm wired.

I had worked an extra two hours last night and didn't take a lunch today so I still had my hours up and when Teresa arrived at work I was ready to fall asleep. A last minute item needed my attention and then we were on our way to the airport.

The flight was a little less than two hours and the second half (including the landing) was really turbulent. Albuquerque had been blasted by winds that had delayed several flights already and while touchdown was smooth as glass, the lead up to it was pretty rough.

Anh, Tyrone and the two kids were already at the airport when we landed, and we got to see their new house, a lovely place that looks like it had been built in the mid nineties; vaulted ceilings, a pretty standard layout with the usual accents, thin doors, granite countertops and a kitchen a mile wide. We talked well into the night, Caden loved playing with Kevin and Megan with the up to the minute report on what Caden was doing that Kevin didn't like and even though he freaked out a little (at the airport, he decided he didn't want to be in the car, for example. I almost had to force him into the carseat until Teresa asked him if he wanted to sit in the back with her and all the rebellion suddenly died away.)

We finally slept around one, and it was a quiet night.

As you know, I'm not that excited about this film, but some of my friends are. But this is just plain cool.

How hard is it to make coffee right?

So I'm a coffee addict.

No, really. I have a coffee pretty much every morning, once a day and I used to go to Starbucks for my morning cuppa.

My friend Mark turned me on to McDonalds iced coffees, which aren't as bitter, cost a dollar less for a large and taste a lot better, especially if an extra shot of sugar is added to the mix.

Oh, sweet coffee bean, oh precious brown orb delighting my senses...

But if you're gonna offer "cafe" as part of your service is it too fucking hard to add a button to your cash register that says "add sugar?"

I mean seriously.

I go to the same damn store every weekday morning.

Whether I'm going to get a perfectly delicious caffeinated beverage or a bitter, bitter brew is a total crapshoot. Even worse, because they don't have an "add sugar" button, but they do have an "add vanilla/caramel" button, the friendly cashier will use that instead, and assure me that the barista will somehow magically know to add sugar instead of their chemical vanilla flavoring.

I only get the drink I want about a third of the time.

Come on, Mickey Dees.

This shouldn't be brain surgery. I just want two extra shots of sugar in my iced coffee. Is that too much to ask?

Jen McCreight is a blogger I really enjoy but this double whammy of feminism was pretty cool. Being aware of male privilege is something I never really thought about (see what I just did there?) but now that I am... I think it can help out a lot and doesn't need the rhetorical denial that many men might make.

So, as some of you know I'm working on a film. Yes, it's silent, and done in segments so I can actually afford to make a film, but there it is.

I got invited to attend the Steampunk Bizarre out in Hartford Connecticut this year; it's a makers art show where all sorts of folks made really cool props and working designs and other amazing things and put them on display. It was very cool.

Joey suggested I make a short video piece for the show to explain some of the props I sent out and originally it was going to be a lot simpler than this. In the end, we shot for a day, I edited that night and a week later had the finished piece.

I'm quite proud of it; it proves that I can actually make the film I want to on a shoestring budget.

I hope you enjoy it!

Yeah, so I've been on vacation for a while and I've been working on my personal project. So this blog has been sadly neglected. But, after my brief trip out to Connecticut next week, there should be more stuff coming along. I want to write about my trip to Europe, some of Caden's hilarious new sayings and a host of other thing, like how I now like McDonalds iced coffees, but they only get my order right half of the time. I mean sersiously. Put a fucking button on your register that simply says "extra sugar."

Sheesh.
